After a fear spike, patience beats speed
On 5 Nov 2026 the market's fear gauge (VIX) jumped from about 17 to 28 in a day, and the Nasdaq fell 5.5%. History says two things about days like this. Over the next six months, the S&P 500 has usually been higher. But over the next month it has often been bumpy, and after the Nasdaq's past pullbacks the selling often went on for about another month. So the sensible move is neither to sell in fear nor to rush in, but to add in planned steps.
Big fear days have often been followed by better six-month returns, but the first month is usually rough. Time and staged adding do more than trying to catch the exact bottom.
